Netta Szekely is a global senior makeup artist for MAC cosmetics. Furthermore, she is one very casual, smart and truly creative woman, and I would add – a rockstar in the makeup world! On her Instagram profile, we are following behind-the-scenes of the fashion weeks, helpful mini-tutorials for every day, and great product tips – you must try her #MagicMix! After two consecutive work trips and international fashion week, she is now at home in Tel Aviv and bringing us news – fressh from runways! Through this interview, we found out how she became a makeup artist, what are her favorite products, trends for Spring/Summer 2020, and more.

CM: What was the turning point in your life when you decided to be a makeup artist?
NETTA SZEKELY: My turning point was rather late in life after I’ve gone through university and was working as a department manager at a travel agency. I was always intrigued by makeup but when I was offered a promotion at work I’ve decided to either take it and forget all dreams of makeup or take a leap of faith and just go for it. I started a makeup course and pretty quickly realized it was IT. Shortly after I quit my job at the agency I found out MAC was opening in Israel. MAC was my first job in makeup. I started in the store, then moved into training and then to senior artistry. It changed my life completely and I still work here till this very day.

Product tip: MAC Pro Lipmix – this is really an insurance that you will always be able to create whatever color you need.

CM: What advice would you give to someone at the beginning of their makeup career?
NETTA SZEKELY: This industry has since gotten much more difficult than when I started. My advice would be: – be persistent, consistent and patient. – learn from everything and everybody – take every fair opportunity that is offered to you and make the most of it – be active in pursuing knowledge – be a nice person and a team player. Many people can do what you do so your personality is as important as your talent – develope your style and preferences as well as a critical eye to what you and others create.

CM: Can you share with us some Israeli beauty tips and tricks? Is there something specific about Isreali beauty and makeup routines?
NETTA SZEKELY: I feel like the world now is smaller than ever. Influences travel fast via runways, social media, celebrities, so generally speaking, we are experiencing a lot at the same time everywhere. Still, makeup is very cultural related always. In Israel, I feel like it’s between trying to convince a woman to wear some Makeup or persuading them to wear less. Not a lot in the middle. While in Europe I find all Women wear some Makeup. Whatever we do – here in Israel SPF is crucial!

CM: What are the three essential products you always have in your kit?
NETTA SZEKELY: MAC Pro Lipmix – this is really an insurance that you will always be able to create whatever color you need. Those are liquid lipsticks in all primary and secondary colors. Matte and super saturated. Exploding with pigment. I use them a lot!
2. Magicmix – this is a mix I’ve created years ago from 3 MAC products I love: Fix+ softening lotion and essential oil. The mix provides combined benefits of all 3 – hydration, softening qualities and radiance. I will not start a makeup without it! In just a few months – MAC is coming out with ‘Fix+ magic radiance’ which is basically inspired by my mix!
3. MAC Pro mixing medium lash – this is a clear mascara formula that I use for holding up the brows. It’s the most powerful brow gel you will ever use!

CM: What are the beauty trends for the Spring/Summer 2020, and which one do you like the most?
NETTA SZEKELY: SS20 will be colorful. It was a season of bold colors, strong shapes and extreme textures. Using color has become so comfortable now – on the runway and hopefully on the streets. Color is the new black. Also, the natural minimalism is still here, that is if the equation 20 products that equals nothing can be called minimalistic. It feels like simplicity is a new luxury. It is indeed luxurious to be able to wear less. Keep low maintenance.
Simplicity is the new luxury. It’s about doing less and accomplishing more.
